I got certified as a doula in 2017 so i could go to Kenya Africa and support moms there. So in 2018 I went for 10 months to be a doula at a government hospital and a birth center in Kenya, while I was there i supported over 700 moms and it was the best experience of my life. So when i support moms i let them tell me how involved they want me to be throughout their pregnancy, I can go to drs appointments if they want me to, I let mom decide how much support she wants from me. In labor i can be totally hands on and do hip squeeze, massages, pressure points again i let mom tell me how much support she wants as I’m always there for my moms.

Care philosophy

I’m there for what the mom wants and will support her however she wants support. If she wants me to be very hands on throughout ill be there as much as she needs me.

As first time parents my husband and I were hoping to enter the labor/delivery process as informed and aware as possible. We were seeking knowledge on best practices, comfort, care, ways to support one another, and how to advocate for our family; Colleen provided all of the above. She supported us with so many resources prior to our delivery date, helped us feel empowered as we entered the hospital, and was by our side throughout the entire process. She has been incredibly supportive and present for any questions postpartum as well. I have already referred her to so many people and will continue to do so! We are so thankful for her!

I'm Marie Engler, mama of two (Olive & Maxwell). With my firstborn, Olive, I wanted to have a non-medicated birth at home, but my husband & I settled on giving birth at a birth center (since it was my first birth). I had an insane labor experience that ultimately ended up with me giving birth in my bathroom. Luckily, my husband & doula were there, but Olive made her appearance before my midwife or the paramedics arrived. This experience was incredible & not only solidified the idea that it was time to change careers, but also ensured that I would make it my mission to inform, support & love on soon-to-be mamas & their families during this magical time. Luckily with my second child, Maxwell, I was able to have a planned home birth with my midwife and doula present. It was such an incredible, positive experience and I would love to help other women have similar experiences. I went to college to become a teacher & was super passionate about it, but after giving birth to Olive, I wanted to be able to be home more & watch her grow. After that wild birth experience, I knew becoming a doula and educating mamas was what I was meant to do. I want women to feel empowered & informed in their choices during pregnancy, labor, & as they move into motherhood. That is why I created Olive Doula Services. I created Olive Doula Services three years ago but unfortunately, had to take a break while we moved across the country for a couple of years. Luckily, my family and I are back in Arizona (our true home) and I am ready to serve & empower mamas near me!

Care philosophy

My mission is to help women feel empowered & informed in their choices during pregnancy, labor & as they move into motherhood. I do this by informing, supporting & loving on soon-to-be mamas & their families during this magical time in their lives.

Marie was a lifesaver for me! I was a single mom with twins. My family was out of state but stayed as long as possible. Once they left I was beyond exhausted and felt hopeless. In came Marie. She was excellent with meeting our needs. Helping me to get more sleep so I was better able to care for my twins. I don’t know what I would have done without her. I’m forever grateful!

Some detail about me. In 2011, I married a man 18 days after meeting him! Together, we’ve navigated six teenagers and homeschooled our youngest child, since pre-K. That little guy sparked us to go co-create our own nonprofit homeschool co-op, Growing Together AZ. In 2020, I began my journey as a professional birthworker, and obtained certification as a birth Doula. Every tidbit of education or experience, has me hungry for more. My background in family development, early childhood education, and now birth work, fuels my passion to empower all people with confidence and positivity. My greatest advice for living, Believe In You. Always.

She helped us understand the weird process of pregnancy and birthing and provided options, advice, and guidance for both of us without judgement. She is not just a doula for couples who are pushing for a “natural” birth, but has so much to offer any couple or mother and any birth plan. I wholeheartedly recommend her.

My mom is a retired nurse and gave Hailey flying colors on the days they overlapped! We absolutely feel blessed to have had her help!

Kailey Murdock

My name is Kailey Murdock- a mom of three, chef by day, and doula extraordinaire. My journey into the birth world started with a "birth plans are overrated"? mindset during my first pregnancy. Surprise, surprise—I ended up with an unplanned cesarean because my little one surprised us during pushing by being breech. Round two, I thought I had it figured out, but a not-so-friendly nurse threw me for a loop, making it clear birthing dreams don't always go as planned. I needed help and I needed to learn how to advocate for myself. Determined to rewrite my story, I delved into the birth world before my third pregnancy. An online class by a doula opened my eyes to the magic of doula support, even if I couldn't afford one in person. Armed with newfound knowledge, I rocked my third birth,? achieving the healing experience I craved. Now, I'm not just a birth enthusiast—I'm a doula on a mission. Inspired by my sister-in-law's observation that I never stop talking about birth empowerment?, I jumped into doula life. I kicked off my LLC, dove into training, and even started creating free resources and online courses. Why? Because every woman deserves to feel informed, empowered, and in control of her birth journey, right from the start.?

Care philosophy

My goal is to help women make informed decisions that best align with their personal birth goals. I am there to support your wishes, no matter what you choose.

Kailey was my Doula for my third birth with my son Owen. My two previous birth experiences involved induction for both, epidurals, pitocin, and an overall feeling that I did not have control over my own body and the process of giving birth. My second son actually broke his arm from shoulder dystocia and had I been more informed and knowledgeable I would have opted to push in a different position other than lying on my back. Kailey helped me gain the knowledge I yearned for to be able to make informed decisions around my birth with Owen. I knew I wanted things to be different and I wanted to give birth completely unmedicated. Kailey spent a lot of time sharing evidence based articles surrounding any questions I had. With her help we were able to come up with a birth plan my husband and I were comfortable with and I felt educated and empowered in the decisions I was choosing for myself and my baby. On the day I gave birth Kailey was prompt and there for me through every single contraction, encouraging me, supporting me, physically massaging and applying counter pressure techniques of pain management. During the final phases of birth while I was pushing Kailey helped me stay focused on my end goal and helped bring me back to relaxing my body and mind and continuing to remind me that I was made for this and my baby was almost here. At 12:54 pm after only about 2 hrs of active labor I gave birth un-medicated in the most amazingly empowering and spiritual birth experience

Since I was little, birth has always captivated my entire being. I was born at home and was told the story of my birth every year as our birthday tradition. I have always had a place in my soul for birth work. It wasn’t until the pregnancy and birth of my first that it genuinely blossomed into something tangible for me. Now, I've acknowledged my purpose in this life and I attend the sacred space of birth and all that comes along with it. It's where I'm meant to be!

As a first time mom, I was very nervous about the unknown and overwhelming task of childbirth. Stephanie worked to make me feel empowered and informed. I also was very anxious about my medical team but Stephanie was amazing at making me feel confident and comfortable. She went above and beyond in the weeks leading up to birth to make sure we were on the same page. She was everything I needed and more in Labor. I believe because of my experience with Stephanie as my Doula is prevented Post-Partum Depression and the like. She was passionate and experienced. My husband, at first skeptical, was over-the-moon with the knowledge and help Steph brought to our birthing experience. I am so lucky she was there for this incredible piece of our lives. At Mindful Conceptions we practice a holistic approach that caters to the mind, body, and spirit for a relaxing birth. I come from a lineage of midwives, doulas, and birth workers that honor traditional support in birthing. I come from a family very deep within tradition to honor the baby being born and support the mother through her courageous creation. This has taught me about the importance for each family to continue the traditions they are looking to start or continue at their births and into their child's lives. Each tradition is different for each family which makes it better and unique to the occasion. From learning from my elders in my family I have learned herbal remedies and natural support techniques to provide before, during, and after labor. Once I became an adult I pushed forward in my dream of becoming a birth worker, herbalist, advocate for women's health, and currently a student midwife. I have dedicated my life to supporting women and families in need of birth/postpartum support and my goal is to make sure that every family has control over their birth and are informed of the information needed to have the birth they desire. At Mindful Concepts we are mindful of our approach, intention, and support! Bemindfulconcepts.com

Care philosophy

At Mindful Conceptions we believe that the family should have full control of their births and receive the support they need with an holistic approach that is safe, natural, and spiritual for the family. The moment when I began practicing Yoga nearly fifteen years ago now is a moment that changed my life but I did not know it then. It was not until several years later, after a short lived career in the commercial real estate business and a growing disconnection from self, that I found myself using my mat to lead the way. I let it lead me through my very first yoga teacher training (YogaWorks 200 RYT, 2011) where I learned to build my practice and teach others asana. And then through an Ayurvedic Yoga training (Dancing Shiva, 2012) where I learned to be a yogi and to use Ayurveda's medicine. This strong foundation fueled further trainings in Pre/Post Natal Yoga (Silver Lake Yoga, 2013), Ayurvedic Medicine (Center for Ayurveda 2012-2015) and advanced Yoga teacher training including aspects of Restorative Yoga and Yoga Therapies (YogaWorks RYT 500, 2015). My teaching began to blend many forms of Yoga, with an emphasis most importantly on living in harmony with Nature and Soul. I started to spend most of my time teaching in prenatal classrooms and found myself in a doula training (DONA, 2014) as a way to extend my work on the Yoga mat, but it grew into something more. In the following days after my first attended birth, it became clearer how Yoga had changed my life. It had brought harmony and alignment with who I was. I had never thought or chosen to be a doula, yet living and practicing Yoga and Ayurveda had brought me here. I went on to complete trainings as a postpartum doula (DONA, 2015), infant massage educator (Infant Massage USA), childbirth educator (ICEA, 2017) and turned my specialty in Ayurveda to postpartum care and education. Then, in April of 2019 I became a mom myself. Giving birth to my son, Oskar, at home was the most incredible experience I have ever had in my life. After years of witnessing births in various settings and situations, I sought out my dream team and birthed as a woman in power. As I re-enter the birth professional space to support families again, I intend to focus my energy as a Childbirth Educator and Yoga Teacher, using the unique perspective my experience and background affords me, to support parents in having calm and joyful birth and parenting experiences.

12 amazing pounds, gorgeous and sliding past my fingers. No, not a baby - I'm actually talking about my bowling ball that I bring to play with weekly, and have been doing so for about 7 years. So what the heck does bowling have to do with birth? A lot more than you'd think, actually. See, a lot of people 'just go bowling' the same way they 'just go to the hospital' to birth. Yes, sometimes it works out, but there's so much more you can do if you understand the fundamentals and strategies behind angles, movement and the system you are working within. And that's why my love of bowling is shadowed by my love of birth, and I've dedicated my life and business to helping people learn the best tools and information to have their best births possible. When I fell in love with birth in 2015, I became a Bradley instructor and would often refer to the studies from Evidence Based Birth®, where Rebecca Dekker, a nurse with a Ph.D. brought together the most relevant and current information to the general public in a way that was easy to understand to help parents make the best decisions they could. So when she announced that an Evidence Based Birth class was coming available to parents, I knew I had to be a part of it - especially with the amazing perks that were designed into it: Hybrid classes, so that parents only need to attend 2 classes in person Online trainings based on well-researched studies & current evidence, that parents get access to view on their own timeline during the pregnancy 4 Zoom classes where parents can get support from the comfort of their own homes A philosophy that prepares the partner and incorporates them into the birth And my support for my students and clients doesn't end there. I've also gone to trainings through Gena Kirby for the use of Rebozo in birth - an incredible tool that can create bonding experiences between the birthing parent and the birth partner during pregnancy and can bring comfort and make space for baby in birth. Also, to make sure you have the best opportunity to have your baby in a position that makes birth as comfortable as possible, I have trained in Spinning Babies (which you'll understand the importance of in an Evidence Based Birth class). I also have trained through Birth Arts International, through their Labor Doula Program, to be able to support the parents whom I've built trust with through classes. Aside from Bowling and Birth, I am a mama to two amazing boys and have an amazing husband and support system to allow me to show up for my students and clients. I've lived in the East Valley my whole life apart from my college years at NAU in Flagstaff. I'm a huge fan of the water, good food and playing hard with our extended family and friends. I really look forward to supporting you in your pregnancy and birth! If you have any questions please feel free to ask, email, phone call, or text are all great! I also have a pretty awesome website with a ton of information, plus easy ways to sign up for class and to book a consult.

Care philosophy

It is my strong belief that you deserve the best birth for your family, and the way to achieve that is through a great childbirth education class and a doula. Sometimes your birth doesn't end up the way we planned, sometimes it is as smooth as butter but either way, you're going to be more prepared if you prepare.

I learned about doulas in my prenatal classes when I was pregnant with my first baby. The doula that came to speak was incredible and I wanted to hire her on the spot. I chatted with her after class but she wasn’t available for our due date. She suggested another doula who was also a yoga teacher. I went to one of her classes to see if we clicked.... well, we didn’t. I kind of gave up after that; maybe I didn’t need a doula after all. A few weeks later a co-worker overheard me talking about it and slid over (you know, cubicle life) and had to tell me about her sister’s doula. She couldn’t say enough amazing things about her and how different the experience would have been without her. I was having bad flashbacks of interviewing wedding photographers but I decided to give it one more try and set up a meeting. As soon as we met, we hugged and I got a wonderful vibe from her, and after 5 minutes of chatting, I knew she was the one. She was such wonderful support to me as a first-time mom and answered every crazy question I could come up within the weeks leading up to my son’s birth. She supported me through 12+ hours of labor, emotionally and physically. She never left my side and helped me have a positive birth experience that I will never forget. This is when I had the first thought that I could do this too! Over the next few years, I supported friends through labor and birth and each time I became more interested. Finally, after my daughter was born (with my incredible doula by my side again) I knew I had to dive in. I attended childbirth education and doula training classes and each day helped solidify I was in the right place. After attending many more births, I decided to make it official, and Desert Willow Doula was born.

Doula Services: FAQs

A doula is a professional that provides emotional, physical and educational support to new parents before, during, and after childbirth and into the early postpartum period. Doulas are companions who strive to give families a safe, positive, and healthy labor experience. They provide parents with evidence-based information and education on childbirth and are someone who the parent can turn to with questions and concerns about having a baby. Doulas also take an active role in collaborating with the parent to create a birth plan.

A certified birth doula offers advice and techniques to help reduce the stress that the parent often experiences during childbirth and provides you with education about different aspects of delivery and labor and what comes after.

There are two ways you can hire a doula through Meela in Tempe, AZ.

You can hire two types of doulas in Tempe, AZ: a birth doula and a postpartum doula. The birth doula is during your pregnancy and through the birth of your child. They provide you with emotional, physical and educational support during your pregnancy, your labor and delivery and for the first few hours after your child is born.

A postpartum doula will support you for the first few weeks after the baby is born. They provide in-home assistance, including teaching you how to take care of your newborn, acting as lactation consultant, and can provide some night nanny services.

Yes, a birth doula can provide support during a Cesarean birth and delivery. Doulas are non-medical professionals and do not replace obstetricians, physicians, midwives or nurses. They are an additive member to the team and provide emotional, physical and informational support to the birthing parent, partner and family. It is up to you whether the certified doula can remain in the operating room during the procedure.

When you hire a doula in Tempe, AZ, your services typically include several in-person prenatal sessions, 24/7 phone and text support, full attendance throughout your labor, and several hours of support immediately following your birth.

A doula in Tempe, AZ can help you in any kind of birth. Certified doulas are able to assist parents in creating the ideal “birth environment” and help parents deliver their baby safely. A doula can provide support during the birth whether it occurs in a hospital, a home, or another birth center of some kind. Doulas are there to support you in your desired birth preferences, whether that is a preference for natural, non-medicated, assisted, C-section or anything else.

Certified doulas can also act as a liaison between you and hospital staff regarding your childbirth expectations and preferences. For example, if your preference is to have a non-medicated birth, a doula can help guide you through that process and create a personalized birth plan. A certified doula in Tempe, AZ does not replace medical staff (such as your obstetrician and nurses).

When a surgical procedure is required, there are some situations in which a birth doula can also remain in the operating room, although this is not an expected obligation. A certified birth doula can also assist hospital staff to improve the overall birthing experience. A doula in Tempe, AZ will typically stay with the parents for several hours after birth to help them with birth recovery.

Evidence suggests that a birth doula in Tempe, AZ can help improve parent satisfaction with their baby’s birth and delivery. The involvement of a doula can also lead to shorter deliveries with less complications.

Recent studies show that parents who have a support person like a doula by their side throughout labor and childbirth are more likely to:

  1. Give birth without the need for pain medicine
  2. Describe their birth experience in a positive way
  3. Give birth without the need for medical intervention, such as C-sections or vacuum delivery
  4. Experience a shorter labor

You can hire a doula early in your pregnancy to allow you time to get to know each other and to begin planning for your later trimesters, labor, birth, and aftercare. It is ideal to hire a doula when you are around 20 weeks along, but you can start looking for one before that.

It is never too late to hire a doula in Tempe, AZ; you have right up to your due date to find a doula near you and receive all the benefits of doula support.

While many people think that a doula and a midwife are the same thing, their educational background and job duties are different. Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide emotional, physical and educational support, while also offering actionable advice and guidance to new parents about how to nurture their baby.

A midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or a certified midwife (CM). CNMs are medical professionals that are certified and licensed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. CMs are also certified, but they do not have nursing backgrounds.

Doulas are not medical professionals; they focus on the emotional support for the parents and the family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. Their job is to provide information, advice, and support to the family not diagnose any medical conditions or provide medical advice.
