Elizabeth V. | Birth Doula in Dayton, OH

Dayton Birth Doula and Hermana

    Practice overview

Feeling safe, supported, and cared for during the birth of your baby is a need, not a luxury. I've been supporting women and families since 2014 and I still LOVE it. As a woman, mother, and trauma-informed doula I emphasize your body's wisdom and ability to birth your baby in whatever way is right for you. Supporting you, guiding you and your birth partner, and facilitating good communication between you and your midwife/doctor/nurses is a role I take seriously and joyfully. I became a doula because with my own births, the difference between having a doula and not having a doula was so huge that she inspired me to become one. Whatever your birth preferences are, you deserve to feel safe and supported. I want every woman and family to have a meaningful birth experience. After the dust settled and everyone cleared out of the hospital room, my husband and I were left holding our son for the first time alone. The first thing we said to one another was “how could we have ever done that without Liz?” As a first time mother, I had no idea what a birth plan was, let alone how to create my own. I had typical fears of what my body would be able to handle. My goal was to be as unmedicated as possible, but was open to any form of medication if the pain or exhaustion was too intense. Liz was in full support of this plan and helped outline specifics that I didn’t even know existed. Liz would text to check in during the weeks leading up to labor, offering suggestions. During labor, Liz stayed by my side, laboring with me at home and then coming to the hospital with me. She made suggestions and balanced coaching me through contractions, and giving me space to listen to my body. She was full of encouraging words, pep talks, and coaching my husband as well. When time came to push it was Liz’s hand that I reached for, and her words that kept me grounded. My goal of a mostly unmedicated birth was met, and I know that I wouldn’t have achieved that with her by my side. After delivery, Liz stayed to make sure breastfeeding was going well. She checked in the days following, and answered postpartum questions. Liz is an amazing doula and I could not recommend her enough. My husband, newborn son, and I are eternally grateful for her skill, compassion, and knowledge.

I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with Liz as my doula. She was my doula for the birth of my second baby, and we discussed in depth beforehand what my hopes were for this labor and delivery. After a traumatic experience with my first, I had a lot of apprehensions about labor with my second. One of the reasons I chose Liz as my doula was her similar experience of a not-great first birth where unexpected complications arose, but having a transformative experience with her second. I was hopeful to have a similar outcome, and I’m so relieved and happy to report that I did. Liz was very understanding and supportive throughout the entire process. I very much appreciate how she made the effort to do so much more than simply develop a birth plan – she listened to my story and really wanted to share an understanding of my expectations and outlook. At the birth itself, I couldn’t have asked for a better person in the room. She was extremely supportive of both me and my husband while remaining calm and grounded. Labor is extremely difficult, but I was comforted again and again by having her to assure me that I was doing a great job and that things were progressing. I also appreciate that she was comfortable in a medical setting and communicated confidently and respectfully with hospital staff on my behalf. I would absolutely recommend Liz to anyone considering hiring a doula. If I were to have another baby I would choose her again in a heartbeat!
